How to Change Your Habits
For us to get to a happier place, meet our goals or achieve satisfaction in life we need to make some changes in our lives.
But as we all know it can be hard to start new habits. Its difficult to let go of bad and unhealthy habits and adopt new ones. This is mainly because as human beings we like being comfortable and anything that is outside our comfort zone becomes uncomfortable and we don’t want that. Another thing is that we don’t want things that are not bringing instant gratification or immediate results. Its like in our subconscious mind we are being attacked and we become defensive; and this defense is going back to our old habits-that which is comfortable and familiar. This is one of the reason that most people fall back into previous toxic lifestyles or we set new year goals but never get to doing them or quit after a short while.
We are all wired differently and for some people once they decide to stop a bad habit they go all the way and never look back; but for the majority, it is a process of back and forth before finally doing it or other give up altogether and chose to remain in those dangerous habits
Definite and Passionate Purpose
You have to reach that point and say ‘enough is enough’; otherwise you will find yourself going back to the old habits. You have to truly determine in your mind that you want to change; if you don’t have that strong desire in you, you will find yourself slipping back into those old habits. Are you not tired of doing the same things and getting bad results? Decide to change. Make a powerful decision that when you think about it, you will not even desire going back those old habits
Don’t make too large goals that looking at them you are discouraged and demotivated to do anything. For example if you smoke or drink everyday and want to stop the habit, decide that this week you will reduce that to 6 days, then the next week do 5 days and so on… This will even allow your body to readjust and will be easier for you.
It doesn’t matter how slow it is; the important thing is that you are making progress
Forgive yourself , Dust yourself and Keep Moving Forward
There are days that you will fail but you cant beat yourself up and remain there. For example if you are on a diet and succumb to the cravings of something you shouldn’t be eating like chocolate you wont go ahead and order a cake, pizza and fries just coz you ate some chocolate (though some people do). Rather what you need to do is to forgive yourself and get back to the diet plan.
Keep away from Triggers
If you know going to a certain place or hanging with certain people will lead you back to your old habits; STAY AWAY!! Don’t go to that Casino if you are trying to stop gambling; don’t hang out with those drinking buddies of yours if you are trying to stop drinking; Don’t go hanging out with your ex if you know you shouldn’t get back together. Don’t keep unhealthy foods in your fridge if you are watching your weight.
Replace Bad Habits with Good Habits
The easiest way to get rid of a habit is to replace it with another one. So replace your bad habits with good ones.Instead of your everyday cup of coffee replace that with green tea; instead of taking soda take fresh juice. Instead of going drinking take up a new hobby that will occupy that time or do that project that you have kept postponing.
Get to the Root of the Problem
The main reason people have bad habits is because they are trying to make up for something or are running from something. This may be a certain fear they have; such as fear of rejection; fear of not feeling good enough. Or maybe they went through a traumatic childhood or have recently encountered a tragic event or experienced a heartbreak. This suppressed emotions such as fear, anger, bitterness will always want you to deal with them and will always find a way to manifest themselves in your life no matter how hard you try to hide them. Acknowledge these emotions and give yourself a chance to heal. Do yoga or meditate or talk to someone who can help you deal with the emotions and heal.
Make it Fun
Find a way to make what you want to do fun. If you want to lose weight and are not into running or doing all those cardio workouts, take a dance class. You will lose weight while having a good time. Join a group of friends and have a competition. Find creative ways to achieve what you want.Our brains can be very creative if given a chance. Let your imagination run wild.
Once you make progress reward yourself. Take yourself out for a treat. Go to the spa; buy yourself some nice bag, shoes or a suit; go have a nice meal at a restaurant; go for a weekend drive; go to a concert. You are on the right path so u deserve something nice.
I believe you have what it takes to make those good choices. The fact that you are reading this means that you want and are willing to change and that is a good sign. You are in the right direction.
