Ready to stop Procrastinating?!!

In the previous blog post, We looked at some of the Reasons why we procrastinate and what to do about them.

In today’s post i want to go a step further.

Now that we know why we find ourselves procrastinating and how to overcome that, is it possible to Create an Environment that makes it Hard to Procrastinate?

The Answer is : YES!!

We shall look at Simple Habits that we can adopt to help us stop procrastinating.

The thing i love about good habits is that once something become a habit, it becomes part of you, like second nature. You do it naturally without much effort. It may take some self control and discipline to get there but once you get there you will be so glad you did it because its no longer a struggle and you are actually getting to see and enjoy the rewards of the good habits

So, lets get straight into it:

Habits to Stop Procrastination

Plan for everything. Write down all the things you need to do including leisure activities and breaks. That way you won’t have an excuse to procrastinate for example you can’t watch TV or YouTube Videos at a time when you are doing a certain project because you already have time allocated for that

Break- down Tasks

Large tasks are overwhelming for most people and can even demotivate you from starting a task at all.

To overcome this, break down tasks into small manageable portions

Create a Sense of Urgency

This can be done by setting deadlines.

Also give yourselves reasons of the benefits that you will get from doing the task now.

Reward Yourself

Reward yourself for following through with your plan or going beyond expectation. Celebrate the small and the big wins. This will motivate you to do more and achieve more.

Change your Environment

If you are in a place that is demotivating, makes you lazy, has lots of distractions; you will find yourself procrastinating a lot.

Change that up and go somewhere or create a place that inspires you to get things done.

If doing your work on that bed will make you feel sleepy and lazy, get out of there and use a chair and desk.

Eliminate Distractions

This is closely related to the above point. Eliminate distractions that make it hard for you to concentrate or do your work.

  • Get away from that noise if you cant work in a loud place.
  • Put blockers on your phone and browser when you need to work online.
  • Put that phone in the other room if you have to.

Don’t allow the Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) get to you. Life wont come crushing down if you stay away from social media or the internet for some hours or days. You are in Control of your Life, don’t let life control you

Be Around Positive and Action-Oriented People

Hang around with the right people. People that are actually taking action. People who inspire you to grow and become better. People that inspire you to take action as well!!

Have Accountability

Have someone that you are accountable to. Accountability creates a drive in you to actually take action

Positive Self-Talk

Self talk is very important. The way you talk to yourself can either make you or break you.

Learn to speak positively to yourself. Speak to yourself of the strength that you have, you can actually do something right and something great. Believe in yourself. Become your biggest cheerleader.

Just Start

Sometimes this is the hardest part but you need to push yourself. The only way to get things done is to start doing. Remember that a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

The more you think about something the more reasons (excuses) that you get as to what you should not do the task and sometimes  you also over complicate things. But once you begin a task, you are able to gain momentum and go all the way and sometimes even go beyond your expectations.

Once you have made a plan on what you need to do, just dive in!

Stop thinking and Start Doing!!

OMG, I’m such a procrastinator. I have gotten better though. I had to realize that with kids things pop vs the days pre kids when I had all the time in the world.

That’s Ok. No one is perfect. The Important thing is to have a Structure. Resolve the urgent matters that pop-up and then come back to the structure that we have.
